If you don't mind me chiming in, there's an additional piece of advice I wish someone gave me when I was in school… INTERNSHIPS!

I was fortunate enough to go to college in LA and intern at Nickelodeon Animation as well as a graphic design studio, but no matter where you are, there's probably an advertising agency, publisher, or creative business near your city (Maybe a small video game publisher).

I did my internships during my senior year, but I think that's actually a wasted opportunity. I should have done one internship per year. By the time I graduated, I would've had working relationships with four different companies that I could go back to for freelance work down there road.

The design studio hired me as a storyboard artist/animator for my first gig out of school. It's been over a decade since I've been out of college and I still get refereed gigs by friends from that job.

Thank you for a nice summary! I wanted to add that if you network by joining SCBWI, then you can enter their contests free of charge (I've entered about 4 each year). The cost of membership pays for itself!

As an amateur photographer I only use Photoshop and Lightroom and upgrade those only when I can afford to and it's worth it. I am trying to REDUCE my monthly expenses not increase them! (I won't even do Netflix because it's a monthly fee!) Sorry Adobe, you've blown it. I'll use what I have until I can't any longer and meanwhile start looking around for non-Adobe alternatives

The subscription is simply out of my budget. I love Adobe products, but would be forced to use open source options if I could not purchase the software anymore. Adobe will lose a faithful customer.

Wow! You got Painter 12 for 129? I got it on sale at 199 but I wish I'd known about the price you'd purchased it for. Good job!

I have been teaching myself Photoshop for about 6 years, with increasing facility as I learned more. I quite love it for graphics but was never satisfied with it for the traditional mediums of paint and pencil. I missed the ability to blend colors and have brush textures that real paint produce, and I missed the texture of pencil on paper. Painter 12 has an incredible range of brushes programmed to mimic those properties and though I've only just received my order in the mail, the textbook provided with it just dazzles. I will continue with Photoshop for my graphic art designs but will switch over to Painter for the traditional arts. It's been what I've been fighting Photoshop for all these years.

Generally, I only upgrade after several more versions have been released. The software is just too expensive! Paying by the month will dramatically increase my costs. I am really frustrated by this.

Adobe, please make this optional!
