ImagineFX Subscriptions and How to Save a Few Bucks

When I first got out of school my instructors told me to subscribe to lots of different artist magazines. I’m sure this was so I could keep up with changing trends in the industry. I subscribed to Communication Arts and Computer Artist, just to name a few. A few years went by and my subscriptions ran out and I fell out of touch. Then I found a magazine that got me excited to start subscribing again. It was a magazine for Digital illustrators called ImagineFX. ImagineFX is a digital artists magazine featuring workshops and interviews with artist that specialize in science-fiction, fantasy, manga, game art and comic books. ImagineFX is from the UK by Future Publishing that started in January 2006. When I first found this magazine I was so excited, I loved the articles and they even included a DVD that includes workshop files that relate to the tutorials in the magazine as well as reader artwork, program demos, free fonts, textures, images and photoshop brushes.

The only drawback was it was almost $20 per issue (on the newsstand) and for someone who is just starting their career that was a bit steep. I recently found a way around this price barrier, ImagineFX now posts the content that was only on their DVDs to their YouTube Channel. I’m not sure if it’s all the video content that was on the DVDs, but it’s a good amount. Also, you can subscribe to their magazine on your iPad for $6 an issue. This allows you to pick and choose the content that you want without spending a lot of money. Now I subscribe to their magazine on my iPad, and watch their YouTube channel to get some video tutorials. It’s the best of both worlds.

Thanks for trying, but honestly, for a person just starting out or for a person who’s been looking for work for 5 years, not only is the mag subscription going to be out of the question, but how in God’s name can I afford an ipad? At the very least, that’s the equivalent of 40 issues!!

I have been thinking about that subscription for a couple of days and now I found your post, it’s like a sign that I should get it. And now that it’s available not only for the iPad but for android devices, its amazing. My only concern was about the tutorials, but now that you say you easily find that in their Youtube channel, Im so going to subscribe.

    Thanks for the info.

Thanks Marielle. Before you make the jump and get the subscription check out their YouTube channel and make sure that they have enough of the video tutorials you’re interested in. I would hate for you to subscribe and not get all that you’re paying for. For me I found it to be enough.
